Ngurunderi legendThe Aboriginal history of the
Murray-it started with a big fish......

The Murray River is a hugely symbolic natural feature in the Aboriginal Dreamtime. It tells the story of Ngurrunderi, the all powerful ancestor of the Coorong people, who chased a large Murray Cod (ponde) with his spear. Each time the Cod escaped his thrusting spear it rushed to and fro, creating the numerous bends we now see in the river. Joining forces with his family Ngurrunderi killed the giant fish and then cut the fish into small pieces throwing each piece in to the water. The pieces came to life and swam away, some as codfish, some as catfish. Mullet etc. The bones turned into bony bream, still frustrating to any person that tries to eat it.
